Cris Dohler Rodas- Flute
Bolivian-American flutist Cris Dohler Rodas (they/them) is originally from Silver Spring, MD and earned their BM in flute performance from the University of Maryland, and their MM from Bowling Green State University. Cris has several years of private teaching experience for all levels plus workshop/masterclass settings, and many students have gone on to win spots in honor bands and earn Superior ratings at Solo & Ensemble festivals. Equally comfortable in solo, chamber, and large ensemble settings (both orchestras and wind ensembles), Cris has been able to coach their students through many different musical experiences according to the students' own goals and aspirations.
I tend to have a holistic and intuitive approach to teaching. I take every student for who they are and meet them where they are at, and we work on a personalized "lesson plan" from there. Whether they want to improve fundamentals, keep up with school ensembles, enter competitions, I am there to make sure they are prepared for anything! I also believe in teaching the whole person, not just the flutist. I take into account their own personal experiences and how it influences their music making, and how they can develop their own "musical handshake" (this is not a term I coined!). I also believe that flute playing is the closest we can get to singing since it uses a lot of the same muscles, so my teaching pulls inspiration from singers I've known/worked with.
