Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is based on two main ideas. One that singing is made up of many little skills and that students in a positive environment in order to succeed. My approach allows me to assess what areas a student needs the most support in, and find repitoire that helps them build those skills. Additionally, I focus on creating a supportive environment for students to learn in where they have fun, build their confidence, and develop a love for music. I also have a Suzuki Method background. I bring elements of that training into my teaching methods.
Biography
I have over 11 years worth of musical training in both voice and musical instruments. I studied piano at the Prucil School of Music in Iowa City, and played alto saxophone from elementary school through high school. I have been singing my whole life and enjoyed singing in jazz choir in college. My love for music led me to obtain a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Iowa in communication disorders. Communication may not seem to have a lot to do with singing. However, I obtained extensive knowledge on the anatomy, physics, and neuroscience of the voice. This background in communication disorders has translated beautifully into voice teaching, as my clinical background allows me to bring a skills focused perspective to teaching. Some fun facts about me are that my favorite color is pink (if you can’t tell)! I love playing pickleball and swing dancing in my spare time. I love musical theatre, pop music, and jazz! Singing is such a joy and I’m excited to begin lessons with you.
