Student Spotlight: Owen Downey

Why did you decide to start lessons?

I honestly don’t remember, it was a while ago. But, I continue to take lessons because even though playing an instrument isn’t always fun, it is incredibly fulfilling.

How long have you been taking lessons?

Over four years.

Do you play any other instruments?

Yes, trombone.

How often do you practice?

At the very least, every other day.

What is one of your favorite pieces you have learned so far?

That’s hard, there’s a lot of good stuff that I’ve played. The piece that I learned the most from so far was William Tell Overture from the very first book I studied from. There were some challenging things in there that I found frustrating, but it set me up well for the future.

What advice do you have for other musicians studying your instrument?

If you can manage to get a cello case with wheels, do it. Your life will be so much easier.

What do you enjoy about lessons?

I manage to have fun and learn something in every lesson, regardless of what the week held.

What do you like about Dynamic Music Studios?

I really like the opportunities that Dynamic Music Studios offers me on a regular basis.

What goals do you have for lessons?

I would like to get to a point in my sight-reading ability where I can look at a piece that is not terribly challenging and be able to play it straight through with minimal mistakes.

What is your favorite musical or music group/artist or music genre?

Excellent question! I really don’t have a preference, I’ve learned to appreciate most forms of music.

What are some other activities in which you participate?

Swimming, school, strength training, the occasional online class.

Owen is a student of Christina Gentzsch, co-owner of Dynamic Music Studios.
