Student Spotlight: Rhea Allen

Rhea Cello Student of Christina Gentzsch at Dynamic Music Studios in Coralville, Iowa.

Name: Rhea Allen

Age: 66

Why did you decide to take up the cello?

Because I used to play woodwinds through high school and college because we didn’t have any strings or orchestra available. So I started when my son took up the violin. He went off and did drums and guitar, but I stuck with cello.

Why did you decide to start cello lessons?

I went to the kids’ class when my son was in Suzuki. Now, I’m trying to further my technique and sound. If you don’t take lessons, it’s very easy to develop poor habits that are tough to break.

How long have you been taking cello lessons with Christina G.?

Five months.

Do you play any other instruments?

Yes: clarinet, saxophone, guitar, and piano.

How often do you practice?

Almost every day for about an hour or an hour and a half.

What is one of your favorite pieces you have learned so far?

I like the Romberg cello sonata I am working on in my lesson. It’s really growing on me!

What advice do you have for other musicians studying your instrument?

Take lessons and don’t be discouraged. It takes a while, especially the bow. It’s a foreign concept, especially when you originally played winds.

What do you enjoy about lessons?

Learning proper hand position and bow position to make a big sound.

What do you like about Dynamic Music Studios?

I think it does a great job of catering to students of all ages and abilities. As an adult, I’m easily able to work this into my schedule.

What goals do you have for lessons?

To be the best sixth chair cello that I can be with the Muscatine Symphony.

What is your favorite musical/orchestral work/piano piece/artist?

I like the Elgar Cello Concerto.

What are some other activities in which you participate?

Horseback riding, sewing, the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra, and church music.
