Student Spotlight: Gretchen Gerke

Gretchen is a voice student of Dr. Jessica Saunders at Dynamic Music Studios in Coralville, Iowa.

Why did you decide to start taking lessons?

I loved singing in general, and my parents decided to put me into lessons!

How long have you been taking lessons?

I have been taking lessons for about 8 or 9 years. 

Do play any other instruments?

I play piano and guitar.

How often do you practice?

I practice my instruments almost every day. Some days I can spend more time practicing than others, but, at the least, I play/sing through my songs. 

What is one of your favorite pieces you have learned so far?

One of my favorite pieces of have worked on is “I Will be Earth” by Gwyneth Walker. It is a beautiful song that I have fun improving.

What advice do you have for other musicians studying your instrument?

Sing songs you love and immerse yourself in your music. Especially for singers, you can listen to and think about your music almost anywhere. 

What do you enjoy about your lessons?

I love working on challenging music and hearing myself improve throughout the weeks.

What do you love about Dynamic Studios?

I love Dynamic Studios because they offer me the opportunity to perform at recitals, hear all the different voices and instruments, and give back to the community!

What goals do you have for lessons?

I want to improve my classical vocal technique and high range.

What is your favorite musical/orchestral work/piano piece/artist/favorite songs?

My favorite musical is “In the Heights.” Some of my favorite artists/bands are Sammy Rae & the Friends and Mallory Merk.
